The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered that Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), be moved to Adiala jail. This decision was made during a hearing about the prison conditions provided to Imran Khan.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq stated that Imran Khan is currently an under-trial prisoner in a case and that all under-trial prisoners in Islamabad should be held in Adiala jail. He questioned why Imran Khan was in Attock jail instead.
The chief justice ordered Imran Khan's transfer, noting that he had been held in Attock jail due to a case that had been suspended. He also asked if Imran Khan would be moved to another location in the future, would the trial be held there.
During the hearing, Imran Khan's lawyer requested an exercise machine for his client. The court mentioned that there are now general and better classes in the jail, and Imran Khan, as a former prime minister and an educated person, is entitled to the better class.
Justice Farooq emphasized that Imran Khan should receive the facilities he is entitled to without violating his rights.
In a separate matter related to the cipher case, the IHC reserved its decision on the request for in-camera proceedings. This request was made because the trial is being held under the Official Secrets Act. Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Vice Chairman of PTI, are both in custody in connection with this case.
The court will review the case record before making a decision on the matter. The court also mentioned that court hearings will be live-streamed in the future for transparency.
